Strathclyde University Chamber Choir (SUCC) is a Glasgow-based charity specialising in acapella choral music. Already boasting European performances and live BBC Radio broadcasts, they wanted to reach a larger audience online. We worked with them to refresh their brand and website to help their music reach more people.
The Problem
As their online platform for publishing news and concert information, Strathclyde University Chamber Choir’s website needed to represent their talent and quality. Unfortunately, SUCC’s dated online presence didn’t help drive awareness or convert that into interest. Therefore, they realised a website refresh would be crucial to reach a larger audience. As a result, SUCC asked us to for UX support to help them solve their problem rapidly and effectively.
Their top requirements for the website were to ensure it was:
- Easy to maintain
- Cost-effective.
These two constraints meant that it made perfect sense to use their existing WordPress installation. That meant our focus was on making the front-end as simple to use as possible.
The Process
During an afternoon collaborating with a member of the choir’s committee, we discussed how best to represent Strathclyde University Chamber Choir in terms of:
- Who they are?
- What they do?
- How, and when, people can experience it?
- Why people should care?
Next we defined, prioritised and roadmapped the different stakeholder requirements. By first identifying and aligning the choir’s goals with those of their users, we were able to develop a new information architecture. The revised structure facilitates quick access to news, concerts and ticket sales. This allowed users to complete their top tasks quickly and easily. The information architecture also empowered the choir to produce fresh and engaging content showcasing their music and concerts.
Finally, we designed a new logo that was more representative of the choir. The classical typeface and stave create a bold, memorable image. While the size and shape of the logo have been optimised for cross-channel use.
The Outcome
Integrating tools to let people hear music and book tickets was key to achieving the choir’s targets. We identified cost-effective services which are maintainable and aimed at the people the choir want to engage:
- Eventbrite: A free, and widely popular, platform for advertising concerts and events. A ‘go to’ for those looking for things to do in their area. Eventbrite brings the choir’s concerts to a whole new audience which they may have never reached otherwise. Check out their page here.
- SoundCloud: Another free, and widely popular, service for music streaming. SoundCloud acts as a great way to store recordings and snippets from the choir’s performances. Accessible on-the-go and as embedded on the choir’s music page, it’s the perfect platform for showcasing their music. Check out the choir’s SoundCloud account here.
Finally, we launched the website on their new, and more find-able domain strathclydechoir.org. Check them out online or even better get tickets for their next concert!
